Some Protestants Might Show Up to Mark Driscoll's Church Easter Sunday

Plans are still coming together but at least one protestant will greet the Easter Sunday meeting of The Trinity Church on Sunday. Las Vegas resident and Mars Hill critic Bob Sluys plans to show up at The Trinity Church with signs to express his views about Mark Driscoll’s new venture.
Sluys has been busy making signs for the grand opening.

Driscoll has been advertising the first meeting with promises of a “free carnival.”

Phoenix Public Radio Features Mark Driscoll and RICO Lawsuit

KJZZ, Phoenix public radio, today released a feature on Mark Driscoll and the RICO lawsuit. In a move which isn’t likely to sit well with Phoenix media, Driscoll again declined to speak to the Phoenix press.

The Trinity Church is in its early stages of development. All it has is a website, some online supporters and a video message from founder Mark Driscoll and his wife.
Driscoll’s previous venture became a megachurch, which is a protestant congregation with at least 2,000 members. At its height, the now-disbanded Mars Hill Church in Seattle had an average weekly attendance of more than 12,000 people, spread across several different campuses.
Mars Hill fell apart when Driscoll resigned following allegations of emotional abuse and mismanagement of church funds. He now faces a lawsuit from former Mars Hill members.

Oh boy; didn’t Brian Houston get the memo about Mark Driscoll’s The Trinity Church?
Hillsong plans to go big in the valley.

Hillsong Church, a global church founded in Australia with 15 locations and over 100,000 in weekly attendance, announces the launch of its third U.S. congregation in the Phoenix, Arizona, area on Feb. 21, 2016. The Phoenix site will initially offer six Sunday worship experiences on three campuses with additional sites under consideration.
“After 15 years of serving as a large, vibrant, multisite church in the Phoenix metro area, and after much prayer and planning, we are excited to announce that we have become the 16th global campus of Hillsong Church,” said Hillsong Phoenix Lead Pastors Terry and Judith Crist.

I know Phoenix is huge and growing but there is only so much oxygen, right?
 
 
 

Amarillo Paper Reports on Mark Driscoll's New Church

With Jimmy Evans as the hook, the Amarillo Globe-News today published a story about Mark Driscoll’s new church.
Evans is a pastor at The Trinity Fellowship in the Amarillo area.
Along with Perry Noble and Robert Morris, we can add Jimmy Evans to the list of pastors who have taken a one-sided view of the situation in Seattle. Where is the effort to reach out to the former members and elders of Mars Hill?
One can read the report of elder charges here. This matter was never resolved. A group of elders investigated the charges and came back with a finding that Driscoll needed to be under the care of those elders. He resigned rather than submit to the very elders he appointed and the process he created.
Along with Noble, Evans’ concern is for Driscoll.

Evans said he’s looking forward to witnessing how the Lord will work in Mark Driscoll’s life and new church.

“It is exciting to see God’s redemptive power working in this situation, and I’m humbled to be a part of it,” Evans said.

CBS News 5 Phoenix Reports on Mark Driscoll's Mars Hill Past

In hindsight, I wonder if the wise counselors are rethinking the decision to omit Mars Hill Church from The Trinity Church website. Thus far, some version of that fact has formed a hook for the Phoenix media to report about the formation of Mark Driscoll’s new church. Watch (text is here):

The absence of Mars Hill from the bios and new church website only invites more investigation on the part of the media. The failure to tie up loose ends in Seattle may continue to haunt the Phoenix effort for quite awhile. And by loose ends, I mean financial disclosures about where and how much member and tither money was made by selling off assets. How much went to severance packages is a frequent question I hear. Furthermore, why did lawyers tell Sutton Turner not to reveal specific figures about Global Fund giving?
More importantly, there are former elders and members who are waiting to hear from the guy who is “healing up.” Be nice if everybody could heal up.
