Former Liberty University Faculty Member Describes Workplace as “Shifty, Dishonorable, Unprincipled, and Hypocritical”

Liberty University is in the news a lot lately but not for great reasons. Yesterday, I called attention to a tweet from LU president Jerry Falwell, Jr.  which disparaged fellow Southern Baptist leader Russell Moore. Moore had lamented the treatment of migrant children at the U.S. southern border. Falwell, Jr. is taking much heat over his behavior unbecoming a college president.

Today, I became aware of a scathing Facebook post from a former faculty member at Liberty. Brian Melton was an instructional mentor at LU from 2014-2018. He worked a full load but was not considered full-time for the purpose of benefits. However, he had sufficient interaction to form an opinion. Since he didn’t sign a non-disclosure agreement, he is now speaking out.

If you are considering LU as a faculty, staff, or student, you should read Melton’s posting. Here are his concluding thoughts:

My own personal narrative aside, I knew of many other people treated worse than I was–a whole list of persons I liked and respected. If the last few years had taught me anything, it was that while there are still many excellent people to be found there, Liberty University as a whole was as shifty, dishonorable, unprincipled, and hypocritical a work environment as could be offered. I could not trust my family to them, and I increasingly found it hard to have my reputation associated with an organization that had proved itself so often without honor. (Yes, I’m old fashioned that way.)

Melton’s posting supports what I have been saying about fears of speaking out at LU.

  1. Someday the train of justice is going to catch Falwell Jr… I hope. He is a low character.

  2. More legalism and oppression from Fundamentalist U! I had little respect for Falwell Sr.- having attended an SBC church for 3 years back in the 80’s that was founded and run by authoritarian, legalistic Liberty grads. I now have zero respect for his son. Falwell Jr!

    1. Pool attendant Giancarlo Granda, the one who was handed $1.8 Million from Falwell Jr, denies knowing anything about Trump’s former fixer Michael Cohen and Cohen’s claim about compromising photos involving Falwell, his wife, or both. Given Cohen’s track record, such claims may very well be nothing other than a complete fabrication. As for Falwell handing $1.8 Million to a pool attendant with no business experience or training, Falwell Jr. can explain that one himself.

        1. Thanks for the helpful context and link. We know Cohen, like Trump, is not to be trusted. Curious how Falwell Jr. has invested much energy (and money) to associate himself with such morally deplorable people. This is how history will remember Falwell and his Evangelical followers.

          1. Update: The Miami Herald reports that they have seen 3 pictures of Rebecca Falwell in “various stages of undress.” However, they can’t authenticate the pictures. Two appear to be taken at the Falwell Farm and one at the Cheeca Lodge, an $800.00/night gated resort off the Overseas Highway in the Keys.

This reminds me of watching the Mark Driscoll meltdown, when it gradually became clear that the train had no brakes and was going to crash.

          2. Falwell Jr. and his U.S. Evangelical followers certainly are morally bankrupt. We simply don’t know if Cohen’s accusations are true.

      1. Will Wikileaks publish the pictures that Junior is suppressing? Not unless Putin says, “Yes!…oohhh, yes!!!”

  3. Brian Melton’s description of the work environment at Liberty University sounds quite a lot like the reputation of its president. I doubt that that is a coincidence.
