Matt Drudge: Putin Is Leader of the Free World

I first saw this posted over at Little Green Footballs…
Matt Drudge says Vladimir Putin is leader of the free world.

This is same Vladimir Putin who is leading the charge against various freedoms in Russia (speech, assembly). And the same Putin who leads a government which persecutes religions other than Russian Orthodox (including Christians).  Despite some efforts to limit abortions lately, Russia subsidizes legal abortion and has one of the highest abortion rates in the world.
Even a cursory analysis of Russia’s problems makes it clear that Russia’s leaders must do something to address their many problems. However, stigmatizing gays and limiting freedoms is unlikely to do much to help. It is certainly bizarre to see conservatives here rally around the former KGB officer.
LGF tipped the hat to the New Civil Rights Movement.

  1. Well, at least Russia and the US may now be talking seriously about dealing with the awful situation in Syria.
As I see it, Russia holds most of the cards while the US has the clout to ensure they may at last be played.

  3. I have even typed and mailed letters to a few leaders in the Catholic Church (including Pope Francis) voicing concerns.
The pope and Warren Throckmorton. Yup, that should just about cover it. Good luck, brother.

  4. But, my dear pilgrim, you mustn’t be a promoter of “conservative authoritarianism” when you stand by Putin.
The simple case is: Both – Russia and “the West” – have their pets and their unwanted. And we must hope that people who are unwanted in Russia find shelter in the West – AND VICE VERSA! (Insofar, yes, I stand by Putin.)

  5. Full disclosure–I’m the one who forwarded several pages from Little Green Footballs. I thought that Doctor Throckmorton, who is working so hard to build bridges, should report on at least one of the stories that I forwarded. I am disturbed to see so many self-appointed champions of the Culture of Life who so openly promote conservative authoritarianism in spite of its well-documented fruits.
To make a long story short, I am a relatively young convert to Catholicism–I recently turned thirty-two and converted circa age 14 within a mainline Protestant family. I once trusted the Christian Right (back when it still held much sway in the US) to guide me. However, i saw more and more material that led me to question the Right, and my attempts to sound the alarm-bells have been in vain. At this point, I am basically starting over in seeking truth and trying to love and care with a pure heart. I have even typed and mailed letters to a few leaders in the Catholic Church (including Pope Francis) voicing concerns. I invite you all to pray for me as I seek truth, goodness, and beauty. I will continue praying for peace and reconciliation.

  7. It’s bizarre to think that freedom of assembly or speech is unlimited in Western countries!
There are more and more Western dissidents and unwanted (not “pet”) minorities which are looking for a haven in the East and in the South. At least one of them, Snowdon, found such a shelter in Russia – so, more and more hopes will be directed to Russia (and may or may not be disappointed).

  11. Well put, Ford.
It does seem that some on the Far Right have – to put it quite simply – (homo)sex(uality) on the brain. Nothing much else seems to matter to them.

  12. Right. Conservatives love the KGB. See what you churn up, Warren?
Drudge is being sarcastic and it goes right over some people’s heads. Geez. The “free world” exc for France and some of the US are the only ones behind Obama. England and others are taking Putin’s position.
    It’s sarcasm, people.

  13. Hi Dr. Throckmorton –
You say: “It is certainly bizarre to see conservatives here rally around the former KGB officer.”
I don’t find it bizarre in the least. High profile representatives of conservative Christianity possess a naked desire to marginalize and oppress gay people at any cost. Scott Lively did a fifty city tour of Russia in 2007 advocating just this type of anti-gay legislation. His “letter the the Russian people” is a horrifying display of overt homophobia.
Social acceptance of homosexuality has become, for some such as Fischer and Lively, a proxy for cultural morality. If Russia is denouncing homosexuality, then it must be acting in a moral fashion (despite any evidence to the contrary).
