Update on a Spurious Bonhoeffer Quote
To summarize, the quote “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” did not come from Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
It was mistakenly attributed to him (it still is) in a museum in Philadelphia, then picked up by Eric Metaxas and most recently used in the movie Bonhoeffer. Despite the popularity, neither Bonhoeffer scholars nor Bonhoeffer’s family can find a source for this quote in any primary source linked to Bonhoeffer.
