  1. I don’t think children this age should be taught about masturbation. Young girls at least need to be more concerned with whether or not to wear orange or green with their pink blouse instead of clitoral stimulation. Let alone – did they get the buttons all lined up this time when they were getting dressed this morning. My goodness – have we forgotten who and what children are?

  2. Tim, was that your personal copy of Cosmo?

he he. I was wanting to know more about what experienced chicks forget to do in bed.

I took both the advocate info and the cosmo info from their websites.

  3. From your “unproblematic” link:

    Level 1: middle childhood, ages 5 through 8;

    early elementary school.

Topic 2: Masturbation [Key Concept 4: Sexual Behavior • 51]

Subconcept: Masturbation is one way human beings express their sexuality.

    Developmental Messages:

    Level 1

    • Touching and rubbing one’s own genitals to feel good is called masturbation.

    • Some boys and girls masturbate and others do not.

    • Masturbation should be done in a private place.

The link to the CDC program doesn’t seem to work.

  4. Odd. Everyone seems to just assume that magazines directed towards the gay community are mostly or ever significantly about sex.

I checked the articles listed in the current issue of Advocate and they are about:

TR Knight and Katherine Heigl, actors on Grey’s Anatomy

individuals including an autistic savant, MCC founder Troy Perry, a fashion photographer, a peace corp volunteer, a sportscaster, a hip hop artist, a pair of identical twins, a gay arab, a gay rugby team, and a girl who turned anti-gay grafitti into a lesson on tolerance

financial investing, corporate policies, and Starbucks

first amendment rights at school and a group teaching students to get along

    GLAAD and media spokespeople

    affordable housing for seniors

    summer reading selections

and a guide to pride events.

No sex that I could find.

    However, Cosmopolitan’s current stories are:

Secrets of Male Arousal – A surprising trigger to his deepest sex cravings

The Girlfriend Habit That He’ll Love You More For

15 Articles Guys Pray Never Run in Cosmo (He’ll break into a cold sweat just thinking about them)

  5. I do, however, find it astounding – being as I live in the Northeast (New England) – that you people seem to be in denial/oblivious about the reality of this issue.

And there’s the rub, isn’t it? Every day the world gets a little less afraid of gay people. Every day the world leaves your bizarre obsessions a little bit further behind. Year after year, you have to face a world that makes a little less sense to you. And deep down you know it’s just going to keep getting further and further away from you. If you weren’t so, well, you I might even feel sorry for you.

  6. Phillips,

Do you really know the gay culture? Scenesand subject matter like you might have seen on QAF, The Advocate, or wherever do occur and probably more so in a sexuallly free culture ( gay culture) BUT there are some decent – very decent – men and women out there that do not take part in that aspect. You are wiping out a whole group of people and bunching them into one whole – all the “ugly” parts. Straights do as much, too. It just doesn’t offend you because you are straight.

You started this thread with undocumented pornographic images at a gay parade, to magazines, to O’Reilly, to etc… You are jumping around and saying “It’s everywhere!” It really sounds like you are saying “I don’t like looking at it” Niether do I – gay or straight.

Granted I would bet gay men have more sex than most people because you have two men! Men are physically and biologically ready to mate more than women. And without the “temperment” of female sexuality in the mix, you get a freer more often experience. I would think?` No back up on this folks, just thinking out loud. Okay. It is what it is. And yes, AIDS is there and why any man would not protect himself – I don’t know – but women aren’t protecting themselves either (please see last post about disease)

So Phillips, you don’t like looking at it. Don’t read gay magazines, don’t go to gay parades, keep your children under supervison when it concerns their education and sexuality. And by all means, teach your children the value of love, intimacy and sexuality. And hopefully, they will learn a better way to express themselves than our generation has done.

  7. Marry, perhaps you missed my comment before recognizing that our culture is become more corrupt, but noting that it doesn’t seem to close to that of the ‘gay’ culture.

CK, please explain why the studies Satinover used from Cameron are blatantly false, since while all scientific research has variables, whether or not it can be used or not relies on whether the basic conclusion drawn from the data is reasonable.

And no, I did not see a citation, if you’d like to accuse him of lying you may do so by writing to him, his publisher, etc. I believe the keyword here was “typical”.

The O’Reilly segment was some time ago so I do not remember specifics. O’Reilly had two of the offended parents on his show to interview them. The program was just what I said: sex/sodomoy-ed. Like I said, at first the school didn’t do anything, told the parent’s – in the words of Bill’O – to “shut up”, I believe after it made news however they reneged, though the parents O’Reilly interviewed didn’t seem convinced that the program in its entirety would be shut down in the future.

I do, however, find it astounding – being as I live in the Northeast (New England) – that you people seem to be in denial/oblivious about the reality of this issue.

  8. Warren,

You’ve got a witness! My mother who is a liberal even shutters at this idea.

  9. One last thought, what about that movie that just hit the theatres …? Knocked Up? Distributed by the same folks who give you family entertainment!

The whole “Use your condom” campaign failed for many people.

  10. Wow – Phillips you jump from one place – pornographic images at a gay parade, to saying I agreed with you, to saying that it’s not one article or two, to yada yada yada (sorry saw an old Sienfeld episode the other night).

It is obvious you do not like gay culture. And you do not have to. But it would be wise to look at your own hetersexual culture and see what is happening there. That you are accusing gays of something that hetersexuals do ( although somehow unbeknownst to you) seems to say that you are not looking at hetersexuality and society. The clues are all around us and obvious to me.

Young girls are being told to get the HPV vaccination

( young girls!!!) so that they don’t get diseases when they become sexually active. That’s on national television and they make it sound like everything is hunky dory! Doesn’t that raise your eyebrows! We are talking about young children being indoctrinated with the idea of sex before marriage or that your partner will have had sex with others and could possibly infect you.

I called Planned Parenthood and asked about a vaccine and they said that nowadays – all women have been exposed to this life threatening disease! However, the idea is to try and inocculate young women before they become sexually active so they can avoid this – that is why the advertising campaign is NOT geared towards all women. Can you imagine? It’s not just gay men that are out there having sex and spreading diseases. Why don’t you get tested for HPV. I think you will be very shocked to find out about yourself. And if you are married – have your wife go in and get checked. Have you known any of the women in your church (or husbands who have talked about their wife’s cervical cancer???) Take another look at that – is she infected with HPV?? How did she get it if she and her husband were virgins at the time of marriage?

If we are going to look at the activites of others and become critical of them – we need to look at ourselves as well. There are a lot of similarities. Granted HIV can turn to AIDS which is more likely to cause death once contracted than HPV – but the results still show – “We are all doin’ it”.

My money is on you having had sex with more than one partner in your lifetime. I have.

Doesn’t this make you ask questions about yourself?

  11. Mary, you kindof missed the point that it’s EVERYWHERE in the ‘gay’ community, not in an article in a magazine here and there. I’m also not aware of heterosexuals being known for ‘deliberate infection’.

You’ve never heard of suicidal heterosexuals? Wow, you don’t get out much, huh?

You’ve also kind of missed the point that sexuality is EVERYWHERE in the ‘straight’ community, not in an article in a magazine here and there.

  12. Warren, perhaps you missed the segment O’Reilly did a few months ago about 8 or 9 year olds being taught in a public school a curriculum including sex/sodomy-education. At first when parents complained, the school board simply said “there’s nothing you can do about it”, until of ‘course O’Reilly started calling them out, lol.

  13. I allowed Phillips comment above because I wanted to give my other readers a chance to react. I do not believe such incidents to be “typical.” I do not believe anyone who comments here, gay, straight or bisexual, would approve of 9 year olds being taught anything about adult sexual practices. Can I get a witness?

  14. Mike, FRI does it so I don’t have to.

Mary, you kindof missed the point that it’s EVERYWHERE in the ‘gay’ community, not in an article in a magazine here and there. I’m also not aware of heterosexuals being known for ‘deliberate infection’.

Not to mention that is’ gay activists that want our kids to be taught an ‘appreciation’ of sodomy:

“There is no question that the failed AIDS education policies of the last decade and a half have had an effect — we now have a generation of twenty-year-old gay men with a certain mortality of 30 percent. We can only wonder how many twenty-year-olds (who were five when AIDS first appeared in America) might have been spared had activists made it their number-one priority to protect individual lives rather than the gay lifestyle. For as the recent survey The Social Organization of Sexuality makes clear, the vast majority of youngsters who at some point adopt homosexual practices later give them up.7 [Laumann et al., The Social Organization of Sexuality, p.295.]

These young people, however, are the very ones told by educators to treat homosexuality as equally good — and safe — as heterosexuality. In one typical incident in the Northeast, a generally liberal, nonreligious mother of a nine-year-old boy reported her son’s return home in tears from public elementary school. He hung his head in embarrassment and shame and finally told his outraged mother how the teacher had explained to the class how to perform anal intercourse “safely.”” – Homosexuality and the Politics of Truth, Jeffery Satinover, M.D.

  15. Well, Michael, I think he’s looking for so called “evidence”. And probably has not read Maxim, SI or many of the other so called straight men’s magazines. Ah well – same ol’, same ol’ story.

  16. Mary: I am not accusing Phillips of having or hiding homosexual feelings. I just want to know why he is reading all those dirty gay magazines. Has he seen a straight singles magazine lately? Or does he only like looking at the gay ones?

  17. Yes, the Advocate is all about gays (and guess what? gay sex) That is their magazine. I do not value gay sex for myself or being gay and so do not pick up that magazine.

Oh yes, let the gays have their magazine full of awful gay sex. They have a right to their dirty, disgusting magazine. I myself am above all that but it’s their magazine and well, they can put what they want in there.

  18. Michael,

I have been accused of really wanting to be gay or having residual gay feelings lurking around inside simply because I went to a gay discussion or forum. I try to get the message out there that not all ex gays are deliberate anti-gay conservative voting individuals.

Anyhow, I suspect, and Phillips correct me if I am wrong, that you are familiar with these magazines because you want to use them as proof of “immoral” behavior? I doubt Phillips is hiding homosexual feelings but suspect he is looking for any remark that is not in line with his values.

  19. I read in Marriage Partners – Christian marriage magazine about 7 things you need to know about sex. And there was some expilicit writing. There is a blurb to the side that lists 8 health benefits of sex. Now this is a magazine that is dedicated to sexual partners. And we make assumptions about who those sexual partners are ( ie: married, christian/believers, of an appropriate age, male with female, etc..) And there are many more articles in past issues about cheating spouses, disease, abuse, extramarital affairs, etc… Yes, all the ugly stuff too.

So Phillips, your argument begins to fall apart. Yes, the Advocate is all about gays (and guess what? gay sex) That is their magazine. I do not value gay sex for myself or being gay and so do not pick up that magazine. I feel that some of the male ads are more sexually expressive than is comfortable for me. I also don’t pick up Maxim magazine nor Sports Illustrated.

You see, being offended is one thing. But we do get back to that story of taking the log out of our own eye. There is so much flagrant sexuality of all sorts out there and it’s about all of us.

  20. “Just read most any ‘gay’ magazine, its saturated with sex, sex, sex…” Phllips, are you sure you weren’t reading Hustler? Penthouse? Maybe Cosmo?

Besides, where are you getting all these “gay” magazines anyway — and more importantly, WHY?

  21. ..and before you call me out on the Advocate issue, it was the issue of April 13, ’99, though they noted that they ran the same kind of issue on 2/17/83 (incidentally, when AIDS was making its heavy mark). It devoted all it’s cover stories to “barebacking”. If you have any doubts about the reality of ‘deliberate infection’, just read this issue…

  22. Yes, our culture is becoming more corrupt.

I’m afraid it doesn’t match that of the ‘gay’ community however. Just read most any ‘gay’ magazine, its saturated with sex, sex, sex…the Advocate even did an entire issue dedicated ‘deliberate infection’, ‘bug chasing’, or whatever. And matched with ‘gay’ bath-houses, bars, etc., it just doesn’t seem to come close. Many facets of our culture are corrupt, but that of the ‘homosexual’ – generally – just seems to be one of them.

  23. Phllips, ever heard of “Mardis Gras”? How about the “Testicle Festival” — I think it’s in Wyoming. Try googling both. Blatant, disturbing, public hetersoexuality everywhere. Or the daily, ridiculous and demeaning treatment of sex and marriage on almost any straight TV program during primetime…

Everywhere I look: Straight people necking, toungue-kissing and fondling each other on beaches and on public streets, across this land from sea to shining sea. Bragging about it on the radio! Showing it at the movies! Advertizing pills to make it longer and stronger. You can’t escape it. Maybe you ought to take some advice from Jesus and get that plank out of your eye before being concerned about “our” speck.

  24. Michael,

I’m sorry. People do need special protection when they are victimized only for being gay. Had you been just two guys walking down the street – it would not have happened.

  25. Phillips, I said pornography is subjective. I see pornography on prime time television. That’s how I see it. Some people can watch the same thing and not see it as pornography. Children at high school dances do some things that just floor me. As it is, sex and the act of sex have taken on FAR too much of this society’s preoccupations, in my opinion. We have just been so inundated with it that we hardly notice it when heterosexuals are doing the same thing.

No I don’t like being home when the gay parade weekend is here because there are and will always be those few people who exaggerate sexual expression and are more expressive. By the same token, if there were a fertility festival in town and 10’s of thousands of people flooded into the city for the weekend, I also would plan an out of town trip for the very same reasons.

  26. I was a volunteer at the last DC gay pride. Worst thing I saw was Rip Taylor being a little bitchy backstage.

  27. Right, Phillips, right.

If you were there and saw something then say what you saw. If you are repeating what someone told you then provide the reference. If you can find it on YouTube, then give us the link. Basic stuff really.

  28. Yes, Warren, just like I’m supposed to provide documentation that the CDC/NHSDA wouldn’t send out hard-copied to FRI, right.

  29. Mary. thanks for your kind thoughts regarding my Mom. Sorry that your Mom got similar treatment by some who incorrectly labeled themselves “Christian”. I guess labels can mean whatever the people using them want them to mean, huh? (grin)

The “man” in me wanted to leave the line, walk over to the creep and punch him in the face. He was NOT, in spite of what he called himself, a Christian. We know who Christians really are by their love. “Bullhorn guy” did not meet the high standards for that lofty label.

If I recall correctly, Jesus never yelled hateful things at those who might be guilty of sexual sin. He, did, however, raise his voice and have some unkind things to say about self-righteous religious leaders of the day.

The incident shook my Mom to the core. She worried that things would get worse, that hate speech could escalate into violence. I reminded her of our mututal right to free speech. I tried to reassure here that attitudes were changing. That sort of thing only happened in back-water towns to real flamboyant types. It couldn’t happen in Riverside, Mom. 18 months later, I took a knife to the lung — just for being gay. Jeffery took five and bled to death.

  30. Boo,

There most certainly have been computerized sexual acts projected on the screen before in D.C., as well as a float of men acting way to comfertable with themsevles and doing the same thing with each other as they walked by…

whatever. Mary herself admits they’re not pleasant sights either way.

  31. In addition, this is a good example, Michael, of how one CANNOT in truth rally a whole idea behind one group of people. Some gays really are out there in a very sexually expressive way that does not suit well with gays or straights. And some christians – or so called – are really hateful and unkind and that does not suit well with most of the population as well.

I think all of us here can agree that that we have seen the worst of each group. But that WE are at least trying to work through these places of difference through blogs such as these.

  32. Michael,

I feel for you and your Mom. I used to go through the same thing with my Mom. And those horrible stick figure signs that some group carries aorund – disgusting. Those people are truly, truly, horrible, unkind, malicious, unrepentant (sp?), etc… There is a website called http://www.godlovesfags.com as a response to those others who – I just shake my head and have no name for them.

  33. Sorry Phillips, I was at the last DC gay pride. No walking or projected pornography that I could see. Now I’m all disillusioned that a Paul Cameron supporter would lie.

  34. Anon2 said: “I do not see why this should bother you, I have seen gay activists doing this kind of thing for years now. Why the double standard?”

First, I have been out for thirty plus years and have NEVER seen it. I HAVE, however, seen it directed at my own mother by some “so-called” Christians. Shortly before she died, I invited my Mom to a Christmas concert by the Gay Mens Chorus of Los Angeles — a peaceful, cultural event at a public auditorium. It was a wonderful, uplifting concert with Christams carols from many lands. It was a celebration of Christ’s birth and God’s gift.

Sorry, no public pornography. Outside, were some “Repent America” types with their bullhorns and hateful signs. My Mom was quite nervous — and worried for MY safety as we stood in line. I told her to just ignore them. It’s a free country, I told her. They have a right to express their views. I took her arm in mine and we stood calmly, proudly, ignoring the hate-mongers and waiting for our tickets to be taken.

As we were just about to go in, the head “Christian” protester, complete with bullhorn and lovely “God Hates Fags” sign, caught my Mom’s eye, then looked at me squarely — and bellowed through the bullhorn: “What are you going to do, faggot? F*** your mom after you get through having her watching the gay sex?

We said nothing. I suppose he had the right. The double-standard, Anon2, is that true followers of Christ are supposed to reflect Jesus. It’s not a “double standard”, it’s what Christ commands. Christians, as an expression of thanks for God’s love and grace, have an obligation to live up to a higher standard.

  35. What was that in the news again, Scott, about the ‘gay’ Bible group that marched onto a college campus, and kept marching despite police ordering them to stop.

I wonder if a judge decided that the ones the police obtained was of the thinking of being able to shout “fire” in a theatre as well.

  36. Unseemly = whatever Phillips doesn’t like.

It’s a nice word to hint at things without being called out on a blatant lie. He can say “too cozy” and hint that it’s sex going on. It isn’t.

I agree that some parades are tacky. And some are too suggestive (or they used to be in the past, anyway). And some folks just don’t have any sense at all when it comes to marching down the street. But every pride parade in the nation has a police presence and if illegal activity were going on, it would be stopped. And a large percentage of those watching are straight (as well as some marching) along with city and community officials and that wouldn’t be the case if illegal activity or live sex were going on.

You don’t have to like the gay pride parades. You can think them tacky, or overly suggestive, or downright boring. But Phillips’ claims are just… well, like all of Phillips’ claims.

  37. I do not see why this should bother you, I have seen gay activists doing this kind of thing for years now. Why the double standard?

Please provide support for this claim. When, exactly, have gay activists entered someone else’s event and tried to drown out speakers with bullhorns?

I know of ACT-Up in the late 80’s. I know of one Love Won Out conferences with protestors outside. But I really can’t recall what you are claiming.

  38. Visit D.C. some time, Tim. Unseemly = computerized acts being projected on the screen, unspeakable meaning, well, just that, but too many idle hands on one float. Some of the ones walking in the street were a bit too cozy with each other as well.

Dunno about Chicago, they should give some advice to D.C. before we let them vote in our Congress.

  39. Independent of your ideas regarding Act-up or Repent America there is a noticeable difference that I think is important. Which group is the one clamoring for attention with bullhorns or confrontation tactics? The answers says quite a bit about who’s on the outside of mainstream society and who’s on the inside.

  40. Maybe y’all should attend the pride parade in Chicago. It has become very mainstream and boring. Church groups, runners groups, readers groups, swimming groups, drill team, advertisement floats for bars, politicians in cars…almost all very non controversial. More strollers and kids (hey it is a parade after all) than drag queens and live unspeakable acts. Times have changed.

  41. Timothy said:

“I do not, however, support his right to go into planned gay events with bullhorns, push his way in front of the stage, and try and drown out the speakers”

I do not see why this should bother you, I have seen gay activists doing this kind of thing for years now. Why the double standard?

For myself I do not think it is a good approach either, but I think it is wrong on both side of the debate not just for those who oppose homosexual behavior.

  42. Pornography is subjective. And even when I was gay, the parades were a little much for me to handle (within the last two decades), too. Eventually, I stopped attending. And on the day that the parade is scheduled for our city – I usually plan an out of town trip.

  43. I just looked out my window. A car was doing the unspeakable down the street. And a breeze was doing the unspeakable through the trees while the jacarandas are all doing the unspeakable in the sunlight. It’s an unspeakable day here today.

Isn’t “unspeakable” a lovely term? It can mean anything or nothing at all.

  44. Phillips,

Gay pride parades can be garrish or tacky and sometimes lack good taste, but there is not a gay pride parade in this country that projects pornography onto a screen. Not one. And sorry, you don’t get to now change that to “unseemly visuals” as thought that is what you claimed.

Incidentally, did you know that the word “lie” appears 242 times in the NIV version of the Bible? Just wondering.

  45. Tim, you have apparently never caught a glimpse of a ‘gay’ rights parade. *gaugh* If you had, you would know that they most certainly project unseemly visuals on screens free for the President to look out at from his balcony, have floats of, well, we’ll say people doing the unspeakable, and people doing the same thing as they’re walking by on the street. I’m not impressed…

  46. Those things should be illegal, walking pornogrophy through the streets with speakers and projector screens, honestly.

    Well, no. More like dishonestly.

Walking pornography through the streets with speakers and projection screens IS illegal. And if it occurred, I’d be right there with you condemning it. But, like so many of your accusations, Phillips, it sounds good … unless you believe that lying is wrong.

Act Up has done some pretty outrages things. Yep. They have over spoken others, made loud unruly demonstrations etc… I don’t like it as a tactic – either way.

Mary, let’s try to limit our outrage to things that have occurred in the past couple of decades, if not to this century.

I’m not a big fan of ACT-UP (which, incidentally was an AIDS group, not a gay rights group). I think some of their efforts were counter productive and self-righteous. But their last outrageous action was, I believe, in 1991. Since then they’ve sort of petered out into obscurity – I think there may still be a tiny chapter in NYC and possibly San Francisco.

  47. um, yea, just ignore that silly looking email address that was supposed to go in the mail (will not be published) (required) box, ha.

Yea, I wasn’t familiar with them, though his quote of “24 hour notice requirements infringe on being spontaneous” was kind of sketchy. Anyway, this one from them didn’t seem bad.

  48. Where are the bullhorns? Seems they were from the protestors if at all. The few times our side ever makes a public presence, we are flooded with violent opposition, and most of ours our peaceful (note: I don’t associate myself with the few that have been out of control..). If we want to talk about ruckus, shall we mention ‘gay’ parades? Those things should be illegal, walking pornogrophy through the streets with speakers and projector screens, honestly.

Sorry. I should have been more clear. I was referring to Marcavage and Repent America when they went into an event called Outfest in Philadelphia. They had been protesting outside and no one bothered them. Marcavage was not content so he led his group inside, they marched to the front of the stage and started sceaming through bullhorns at the attendees. He and three others were arrested and for months were martyrs in the Christian press.

I assumed that everyone here was familiar with Marcavage and Repent America.

Incidentally, Marcavage also blamed Hurricane Katrina on a gay event in New Orleans. Which was a bit ironic as the French Quarter was one of the areas that suffered the least damage.

  49. Dunno what they’ve done in the past, but doesn’t seem they did much this time, just “preached”. There was a peacefull student assembly a while ago at a ‘gay’ event and the ‘gays’ went wild.

  50. *thumbs up* I’d hope you’re not a fan of ‘gay’ parades either, since they’re known for being the same thing.

..and scratch ‘Savage’ from my previous comment, should be Marcavage, ha. Michael Savage, Michael Marcavage.

  51. Act Up has done some pretty outrages things. Yep. They have over spoken others, made loud unruly demonstrations etc… I don’t like it as a tactic – either way.

  52. “Repent America showed up and its members began to preach. Hundreds of university students protested their presence, and police eventually forced the two dozen Repent America demonstrators off the campus.”

In concern to Savage, what he’s saying is that they accept the sinner, not the sin.

  53. Marcavage said. ”We’re not anti-gay,” he said. ”I’m pro-gay, but I’m anti-homosexual behavior.”

That doesn’t make sense even in Antigayspeak.

I do support Marcavage’s right to protest on the campus. He is entitled to express his views.

I do not, however, support his right to go into planned gay events with bullhorns, push his way in front of the stage, and try and drown out the speakers. And I do not support Christian media making martyrs out of Marcavage and his followers when the police intervened. (Unless, of course, churches don’t mind if Act-Up were to show up with bullhorns at their annual church picnic in the park.)

And I do object to Marcavage trying to instigate police disputes (like not cooperating when the police tried to restore peace) so that he can get in the news. Marcavage really is the sort of evangelist that makes non-believers think that Christians are all a bunch of hateful lunatics.

  54. I’m all for free speech but it seems this group used this opportunity to raise a ruckus and get media attention pointed at thier group. Their message is nothing new – they are just going against the schools rules (and claiming constitutionality) to use the media to amplify their group to a larger population. Gay activist groups have done this for years.

  55. ”We’re not anti-gay,” he said. ”I’m pro-gay, but I’m anti-homosexual behavior.”

    Wow, what a hate-monger.

So, Warren, what’s your opinion on the pornographic ‘gay’ parades that march by the White House in Washington D.C.
