Rick Warren’s AIDS conference dust up

The last several days, a fuss has erupted about an AIDS conference at Rick Warren’s (Purpose Driven Life) Saddleback church hosting an AIDS conference. Pro-life groups are upset that Barack Obama is speaking (he favors partial-birth abortion) and the new AIDS Truth Coalition wants more time at the conference on gay promiscuity. Saddleback has responded and the conference goes on.

Given our discussion of gay culture, is there something to the idea that gay leaders should be more vocal about promiscuity? That sounds provocative but I mean it to be a serious question. Feel free to comment on any aspect of this controversy.

  1. “is there something to the idea that gay leaders should be more vocal about promiscuity?”

Well, Larry Kramer has spoken up about it since the 1980’s. That was the first and easiest case to come to my mind.

But frankly, when it comes to “gay leaders”, I’m not even sure who they would be. I struggle to even name them. Sure, there’s Matt Forman at NGLTF and Joe Solo-whatshisname at HRC, but that’s like saying they have all the influence in the community of whoever’s the head of NAACP. And they probably do, which is to say, not much.

I certainly think the idea has merit. But as it stand right now, society does not demonstrate it actually values monogamy among gay couples. People say that because marriage is a stabilizing influence, we need to keep gays from having access to it.

It’s like anyone else, many people tend to rise or fall according to expectations.

    vocal in what way?

  3. Same-sex “marriage” will never stop gay men from being promiscuous

You’ve been reading too much J. Michael Bailey.

it will never stop gay men from anal intercourse

Please, everyone knows marriage kills sex.

It’s a mindset. You either believe that anal intercourse spreads HIV or you don’t.

It only takes one act of anal intercourse to contract AIDS.

It does take quite a mindset to believe that a sexual act can cause a virus to magically appear. I’m afraid you left out a couple teensy lil factors: the intercourse has to involve a partner who has the virus, with no barrier to transmission.

We have to get tough on AIDS, and that includes gays. And stop blaming everybody for a virus.

Or we could get tough on everybody about the virus and stop blaming gays.

If the African bushmen can cooperate with health authorities in the CDC to stop Smallpox, why can’t metropolitan gays cooperate with the CDC or others to stop spreading HIV?

Well there was the little matter of a vaccine.

Gays have enabled themselves to death. Shut down the bath houses, close down the circuit parties, and stop using pornography.

Pornography will make the demon who lives in the centerfold (J. Geils lied to us!) give you AIDS. Now THAT”S scarier than a Stephen King thriller. (Well, maybe not It)

Recognize that freedom comes at a price.

Such as battling freezer demons and putting up with the likes of you.

  4. Same-sex “marriage” will never stop gay men from being promiscuous; alternatively, it will never stop gay men from anal intercourse, the highest risk factor for HIV/AIDS.

Marriage has nothing whatsoever to do with the spread of AIDS.

It’s a mindset. You either believe that anal intercourse spreads HIV or you don’t.

It only takes one act of anal intercourse to contract AIDS.

Here’s a book for you to read, “The Demon In The Freezer” by Richard Preston about the irradication of Smallpox. It’s scarier than reading a thriller by Steven King – because it really happened. Buy a copy for yourself for Christmas.

  5. I think it is disingenuous of evangelicals to simultaneously decry promiscuity and make same-sex relationship their primary political target. If you don’t want gay men to be promiscuous, you have to allow them an alternative to promiscuity.

This year alone, anti-gay activists have:

    1. Called same-sex relationships a threat to the institution of marriage and of society as a whole

    2. Pushed to constitutionally exclude same-sex couples from any recognition in eight states. The most egregious of these forbids contracts between same-sex persons.

    3. Lobbied state Supreme Courts to deny any measure of equality or access to services to same-sex couples which are provided without question to the most unfit of heterosexual couples.

    4. Lauded and supported a landscaping service that refused to do work for a gay couple

    5. Supported efforts to overturn benefits provided to same-sex couples by universities

    6. Sought to treat a same-sex civil union as though it had never occurred in their effort to block a lesbian mother from visitation with her daughter

    7. Claimed that same-sex relationships are empty, worthless, and void of love

    8. Claimed that same-sex monogamous long-term relationships do not exist

And the list goes on and on.

It is very difficult for me to believe the claims of these individuals when they complain about promiscuity. In fact, based on all of the effort and energy expended in fighting gay couples, it would appear that they want gay people to be promiscuous.

  6. If there will be voices raised on this issue, it’ll have to come from gay leaders. When it comes from people who are also saying things like:

let us not neglect the major catalyst for AIDS here in the United States of America: homosexual promiscuity, tolerated and encouraged by pro-‘gay,’ ‘safer-sex’ advocates

    and

Passing out condoms at sex clubs designed specifically to facilitate men having reckless, anonymous sex with other men is preposterous.

    and

We call on Rick Warren to get real about HIV and AIDS in this country. Males having sex with other males is the single largest cause of HIV in the U.S. Will Warren get to the heart of what’s really at stake here? Will he say, flat out, that people who are practicing homosexuality need to get out of that lifestyle? Will he tell his millions of followers that being an open and unrepentant homosexual is incompatible with the Gospel?

    and

The spread of HIV and AIDS worldwide CAN come to an end ONLY when the promotion, acceptance and tolerance of homosexuality worldwide comes to an end.

(all via the “AIDS Truth Coalition” link)

then I just don’t think people are going to listen. And since those quoted clearly have no idea what they’re talking about, that might be a good thing.
