The American College of Pediatricians versus the American Academy of Pediatrics: Who leads and who follows?

Just for fun, let’s compare the American College of Pediatricians with the American Academy of Pediatrics.
In August, David Barton and Rick Green at Wallbuilders said the ACP is the leading association of pediatricians in the nation. Even after their error was pointed out by the AAP and a reader of this blog, Rick Green said yesterday on air that the AAP “has more members and has been around a little longer” but both Barton and Green stuck by the story that the ACP was the leading group. However, ACP’s own comparison demonstrates significant differences between the two organizations. The following chart comes from the ACP website:

Note that the ACP does not provide Continuing Medical Education or a professional journal. Access to other professional programs (Red Book, Prep program) is offered via higher fees, but the AAP or affiliated groups actually provide the services. In other words, if there was no AAP, there would be no continuing education or professional publications.
A hallmark of a profession is the provision of training, certification, and continuing education. The ACP does not none of this independently. The ACP has been around since 2002 and the AAP since 1937. Annually, the AAP spends millions on professional publications and continuing education; the ACP receipts in 2008 were less than $60,000.  The AAP has over 60,000 members, the ACP about 200.
Specialty groups have a long history in the professions and they can have a place, but it is not in the lead. If the ACP disappeared, members of the group would probably miss it, but nothing would change about pediatrics as a medical specialty. The ACP relies on the AAP for the CMEs and research information required to stay in practice.
Who is leading and who is following?

If I were to choose a leader in this profession, it would be ACP, hands down! AAP’s politically correct positions obviously lead AWAY from a healthy, wholesome future generation.
Leadership is a value judgement, regardless of numbers.

Yes it is a value judgment .. and when an organization (ACP) uses outdated research and (it would appear) mascarades as an organization that it is not in a letter to public schools across the nation .. then .. no I am not going to rely on them. Healthy wholesome future generations are not built on outdated research and deception.

Your quotation from Rick green there, and the simple given comparisons…….
“You people got it all wrong. Why do try to accuse us good Christians of lying?”
…..I can just hear it now.

  3. The primary purpose of this group has nothing to do with pediatric care in general. Instead it’s primary purpose is to mislead the public to believe that an authoritative pediatric consensus believes that it is better for children to not have
access to safe sex education and contraception, that it is better for children to have their same sex parents have no parental rights or benefits and it is better for children to have quack therapies to change their sexual orientation even if the child is not the one who wants the change.

  5. Just because an organization is large and PC does not mean they are right, moral, ethical or leading in any good way. Most of the pediatricians I know do not agree with the AAP on parental notification, right of conscience or their other moral/ethical stands.

  7. “That is explained by O’Sullivan’s First Law: All organizations that are not actually right-wing will over time become left-wing. I cite as supporting evidence the ACLU, the Ford Foundation, and the Episcopal Church. The reason is, of course, that people who staff such bodies tend to be the sort who don’t like private profit, business, making money, the current organization of society, and, by extension, the Western world. At which point Michels’s Iron Law of Oligarchy takes over — and the rest follows.”

StraightGrandmother= I think it is about the numbers. An anlogy, there can be small innovative software companies building really cool operating systems, however Microsoft and Apple are the Leading companies in their field because most of the personal computers in the world run on their systems. I think the numbers matter, and the more members (or customers) you have, makes that organization the Leader in their field.

“If I were to choose a leader in this profession, it would be ACP, hands down!”
And you base this decision on what criteria? For example, in his initial post, Warren listed several criteria about what he thought constituted leadership and why he considered AAP to be a leading professional organization and not ACP.

  17. we got a letter from one of the other pediatric associations, let’s see the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has more members and has been around a little longer

    60,000 members vs 200.
    1937 vs 2002
Yes, a few more members. And around a little longer.
The AAP was founded to practice Pediatrics. The ACP was founded to practice Politics. George Rekers was one of its leading lights, a model for the rest.
