What was that purpose? No different from today, I think. I’m open to argument, but I see no change whatsoever in its intent or effect since then.

And they should expect persecution – or, at least, suspicion – from those who wield earthly power, while objecting most strongly to the persecution of others.

Selling out is all too tempting when one is confronted with the seductive whiff of power and influence. But, as Warren suggests in his closing sentence, it will do the ‘sellers’ no good in the long run [cf. Matt 7 : 21 – 23*].

(* I must admit that those words of the Lord lead to considerable nervousness on my own part!)

Evangelicals shouldn’t want the “fondness of magistrates to foster Christianity” to quote Leland.

Not even when THEY are the ones on top?
Like the Magistrates of Calvin’s Geneva or the Saudi Religious Police?

The Family seeks such fondness as a means of operation. When Christians call on government leaders to give aid to the worship of Jesus, the Baptists should be the loudest in complaint.

Not when THEY get to Hold the Ring of POWER, carrying out God’s Will (or what God would will if He only KNEW what was REALLY Going On…)
