Sorry, getting elected to public office doesn’t mean you have to give up politics.

AND I would point out that opposing David Barton really isn’t a political issue. It is an issue of facts and reality. David Barton is a lying liar who lies. If he told me the sky was blue, I’d be checking out the window, that’s how trustworthy his word is. All people of good will should be out there telling the Idaho GOP that we want our government based on reality, not David Barton’s lies.

Setting aside for a moment the fact that this is a purely partisan event, I believe your example of the role of an elected representative in a republic is distorted. To represent all the people does not mean one has to agree with all viewpoints or never take a stand with which a portion of them may disagree. It sometimes means making decisions which are in the best interests of the whole. But again, this was a GOP event and any member of that party should be allowed to object to a misuse of it’s pulpit to spread dangerous misinformation from a proven fraud – for the good of the party and the public. Some would call that good leadership.

The racial killings at the weekend have triggered off a wave of protests.

Synonyms include: bring about, prompt, provoke, set off, spark, elicit, give rise to, set in motion.

The use of the word in the title is perfectly (and traditionally) appropriate and your concentration on it rather odd. Tacitus explained it perfectly. Also, since you are picking nits in the extreme by concentrating on a non-issue, it really does seem that you have been “triggered” in the more recent use of the word.

Goodness, is nuance in language not allowed anymore? Warren is clearly using triggered in the classic sense that one event sets off another, not that the protesters were “triggered” in the much more recent usage of the word that implies causing an unreasonable or irrational response.

Also, elected officials have as much right to protest (i.e. exercise freedom of speech) as anyone else. They are not stopping Barton from speaking at what is a private fundraiser, and they’re not going to interfere with his right to speak.

In other words, you’re the one who’s overreacting.

but the government picked a side, by inviting someone as unacademically sound and biased as Barton. Unless it’s a panel discussion and there is a legitimate historian also invited, then they are implicitly siding w/ Barton and his ilk
