No one should take anything a politician says at face value. However if a politician is being deceptive about the reason for going to war, it is because the real reason would be unpalatable to the general population. Ex: the real reason for the war in Iraq (i.e. oil) wouldn’t sit well with the general US pop.

If Stephens was trying to deceive about the reason for the civil war it would be because the “real reason” was worse than slavery.

Not all people who oppose CRT necessarily support Lost Cause, but all people who support Lost Caùse definitely reject CRT, that’s the paradox.
