I'm in Kentucky, and early on when COVID tests were scarcer than hen's teeth the state health department used # of flu cases as a way to estimate how well the shut down was affecting COVID-19 transmission. And wouldn't you know it, the number of flu cases was way down.

I usually get a flu shot anyway, so when the health department recommended it I went ahead and got it, but I had been thinking that while yes, we do need to minimize flu cases to avoid stressing the healthcare system I was inclined to think that the masks and social distancing would help reduce the # of flu cases in any event.

California right now has an Rt (rate of transmission) around .8, i.e. five current infections will only infect four others. If we can stay that way, we should see cases dropping in-state.

However, school reopenings are on the horizon, with the accompanying superspread events.

Oh, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally?

"SCREW COVID - I'M GOING TO STURGIS!"?

There's now upswings in cases in several Midwest states that are tracing back to them.

Very interesting, and thanks for sharing, Drs. Welton and Throckmorton.
However, it would be interesting to study a time period removed from schools and universities reopening, as I'm sure the data for the first week in September is chaotic.
