Teresa,

She did tell me that change from gay to str8 has happened, but was not common. I understood from the outset what I wanted then, and that’s what we’re working on. She is a Christian Counselor and Minister.

This is incredibly heartening. Thank you for sharing :)

Warren, your analysis of this Report, and APA's openness and willingness to be as unbiased as possible in SOCE efforts in their Report, is truly wonderful. I hope the following does not further politicize this issue:
Whereas some evangelicals may be troubled by the negative view of sexual reorientation in this report, there is much here that clarifies important aspects of work in this field.

From my own experience in therapy, which is with a Janelle Hallman Associate, the Practice is longer associated with Ex-gay ministries, has been very much the SIT approach. I wanted congruence with my faith beliefs and my troubling same-sex attractions. My therapist was clear at the start that sexual orientation change should not be my primary goal, if a goal at all, but rather working through my issues of abandonment and sexual abuse. She did tell me that change from gay to str8 has happened, but was not common. I understood from the outset what I wanted then, and that's what we're working on. She is a Christian Counselor and Minister.
I can tell you that my main goal was to not enter a sexual relationship with a woman, and to be able to handle my same-sex attractions. Handling the other issues, and just being able to talk about these things, has 'changed' me. I'm much more at peace with who I am, and how to handle things as they come up. I am not str8, and it's becoming increasingly clear to me, that I may never be able to relate emotionally to men as a str8 woman would. But, I can tell you, also, that I am more interested in men ... they've become more appealing.
So, I can see some secondary benefits, and I sure think this type of therapy is the way to go for adults with same-sex attraction. Children or adolescents may have more opportunity for change, the neural plasticity may be more malleable at that age, so perhaps another therapeutic paradigm such as SOCE would be more efficacious.
Anyway, Warren, kudos to you for SIT; and, thanks again for this BLOG. This is incredible stuff.
