What Mitch Daniels has going for him is certain national connections and connections in Washington from his time in service there, I could see a hung GOP convention between Romney and Huckabee in which the back-room deal drafts Daniels from the his third or fourth place run in the primaries. But that's Daniels' problem - he just doesn't have that national recognition that the others have. He'll try to get there, but he most likely won't. Hoosiers are always also-rans it seems. I thought Bayh should have run in 2008. He is the perfect moderate Democrat. But I guess he just got sick of Washington. He would have been a more perfect counterpoint to Obama than Clinton. I guess she might still run in 2012 against Obama... she might win this time.

The late President Reagan, for all his defects, struck me as a rather effective 'figurehead', with his infectious optimism and evident good humour. And his willingness to engage so constructively with Mikhail Gorbachev must surely be something for which the world should be profoundly grateful. (I say this as someone who, if a U.S. Citizen, would almost certainly be a registered Democrat.)

As for Mitt Romney: my cousin used to work in the British Embassy in Washington D.C., and he rated Romney highly among the 2008 GOP potential presidential candidates.
