@David Blakeslee:

"If you want to make such accusations, precision is paramount. Since you are citing Old Testament Laws, you should be directly blaming the Followers of Moses."

Blame the Jews for the homicidal conduct of evangelicals? That is a widely practiced, time-honored Christian tradition, but one that I don't care to follow. When the Jews exceed a billion in number, become infected with an evangelical will to conquer, and develop doctrines like the Great Commission and the Cultural Mandate to justify their global predation, then I will direct some criticism in their direction.

The OT's laws on homosexuality, and indeed on sexuality generally, were not rendered unenforceable by the Christians' so-called new covenant. They remain in full force and effect. Further, even those Christians who erroneously believe that these statutes have been replaced by the new covenant still have no basis to morally condemn them. The presence of these fatwas in Leviticus means that they came from your god and therefore are, by definition, moral. To suggest otherwise is to argue that your god's morality changes over time.

The most such a Christian could argue is that it is no longer required that Mr. Kato have his skull bashed in, even if it is perfectly moral and godly to do so.

That is why the actions of Pastor Ssempa and G. Muhame and the killer of Mr. Kato are bloodthirsty and murderous, but at the same time, Biblically sound.

"Public does it, condemnation. Government does it, good public policy. What are they teaching at Makerere U?"

The Bible, Dr. Throckmorton. They are teaching the Bible. See Lev. 18:20. Your god mandates the execution of gay people. Mr. Kato is simply one more dead African and one more dead homosexual for which Christianity can claim credit.

You are a decent man, Dr. Throckmorton, but you seem unwilling or unable to grapple with the fact that the book that you ascribe to a perfect creator of several hundred billions of galaxies has managed to get horrifically wrong virtually all of the moral questions we confront here on Earth (war, slavery, form of government, gender relations) . If anyone truly lived out Biblical values, they would bear a striking resemblance to the killer of Mr. Kato or, for that matter, to the various defendants that have sat in the defendants' dock at the International Criminal Court.

I can assure you that I would oppose any 'Anti-Heresy Bill' on principle. I also oppose all forms of violence against those who happen to hold unorthodox views while claiming to be 'christian'.

@ E. Shonubi

I understand your anger. But the Bible is not Christianity - Christianity is based on Christ, who, through his death and resurrection, replaced the Levitical code with Grace.

So-called 'christians' who use Leviticus to promote the murder (whether 'state-sanctioned' or not) of gay people are ignorant heretics - because they fail to understand that there is New Convenant in place. Ironically, liberal Jews often understand this better than people like Muhame (who says he's a Christian).

(Incidentally, those verses in Leviticus are almost certainly referring to ritual prostitution and sexual abuse, not consensual (still less loving) same-sex relationships. Furthermore, Leviticus is really about stopping the exiled Jews in Babylon 'going native' - the Book was probably compiled around 550 B.C., and contains a whole raft of rules that Muhame & Co. happily ignore.)
