Mass delusions can serve practical purposes too.
Maybe what we’re seeing here is just the tip of the iceberg, people displaying in excess a faculty that’s present in many: man’s capacity to delude oneself is huge! Just read what assortment of beliefs people have been supporting throughout history, some of them really far-out. We’re probably doing it right now, if you know what I mean. 😉
