I suspect that a number of them were based on the reality of the writer’s experience but I’m also sure that a number of songs simply picked up on the ‘back seat Becky’ theme.
In evaluating the merits (or lack thereof) of this song, I think David said it best. If it’s an anecdotal telling of one man’s actual experience, then it needs to be considered for it’s telling of an unconventional story. However, if it was the result of reading a bit of reparative therapy and then trying to manufacture a story that fit that theme, it’s little more than propaganda.
If it’s the former, it makes sense that someone who had such a change in desire and self-identification would want to figure out what ‘set them up’ to become involved in a behavior, identification and lifestyle that was mistaken. Was he ‘really gay’ to begin with or was he a straight person that took a several year detour into homosexuality? If a counselor or therapist has a pre-conceived notion of the answer to this individual’s life journey, the integrity of their therapy would be questionable.
