So all 7 Justices agreed that same-gender couples deserved marriage benefits.

However, the opinion doesn’t state what happends if the NJ Legislature doesn’t act in 180 days. I imagine if that happens the licensing authorities in NJ may start issuing marriage licenses to same-gender couples, or a lower court judge may order that to happen. This possibility might spur the pro-gay marriage forces in the Legislature to try stalling any civil unions laws. It will be interesting to see what happens either way.
