He was perceived as just too extreme in his positions - including his harsh homophobic statements - to represent the people of the state. I think Democrats would dance with glee if this guy were on the Republican ticket. They would simply pull out his old statements and run them over and over and watch the Republican numbers drop. What extremely conservative folk forget is that while you might think your positions are consistent or pure or in line with God, the rest of the country thinks they are nuts.
